Keeping Track of Your Books – Spreadsheets Are Your Friend | Track Fields

If you own a lot of books, good for you. It can be wonderful to have your own library right in your own home. Unfortunately, though, when you start getting into numbers like 500 or 600 books, it can be difficult to remember which books you already have.If you can’t keep track of your books, it can lead to buying extra copies that you don’t need. These days, wasting money on such things is definitely a bad idea. That’s why spreadsheets can come in handy.

All you have to do is get a spreadsheet program and create fields that you can use to categorize your books. At the very least, you should have fields for title, author and whether the book is paperback (pb) or hardcover (hc). That way, you’ll always know what you own.If you’re more serious about your book collection, you may want to add some fields. You might want a date of publication, what edition the book is, the condition of the book or other random notes to tell you that you have a great copy or it could stand replacing, if you find a better one.

Once you have the spreadsheet, all you have to do is print off a copy and take it with you when you shop. That way, you’ll never buy the same book again, unless of course you want to for some reason. However, you have to be diligent about updating your spreadsheet each time you get a new book. Otherwise, you’ll be back to square one again.
